1316747 Coated foamed plastics sheet SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 4 Sept 1970 [10 Oct 1969] 49953/69 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and B8] A process for the production of a laminate incorporating an expanded plastics sheet and a toughened plastics sheet comprises (a) laminating a sheet or a layer of a toughened composition comprising an elastomertoughened polymeric vinyl aromatic compound to a sheet of an expanded polymeric vinyl aromatic compound; and (b) blending scrap laminate resulting from processing operations applied to the laminate with the toughened composition to form a composition for lamination to the expanded plastics sheet, or to form a composition from which toughened plastics sheet is formed for lamination to the expanded plastics sheet. The preferred polymeric vinyl aromatic compounds are polystyrene and copolymers of styrene with acrylonitrile or with acrylonitrile and butadiene. Suitable elastomeric components for making toughened polymeric vinyl-aromatic compositions are natural rubber or synthetic rubbers, e.g. polybutadiene, acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene rubber or styrene-butadiene rubber. In a preferred embodiment, the feedstock is produced by polymerising styrene in the presence of rubber and a lubricant and admixing the product with crystal polystyrene which is progressively replaced by scrap laminate as the process proceeds. The expanded vinyl aromatic polymer sheet may be formed by the extrusion of polymer particles incorporating a blowing agent; alternatively, it may be formed by expanding and moulding the particles with subsequential peeling of the sheet from the resultant block. The laminate may be formed by applying a layer of the toughened polymer by a roller-coater onto a preformed expanded sheet or by extruding the toughened sheet onto the expanded, e.g. on a roller nip. Package articles may be made by shaping a laminate made by the process of the invention by the application of pressure or vacuum and optionally heat into a 'lay-flat' blank embodying strengthening elements and hinge elements, trimming the blank (if necessary) and folding it along the hinge lines to bring the sections of the package into their desired relative positions, the sections then being secured on said positions.
