Abstract
1315828 Opal glass JAMES A JOBLING & CO Ltd 22 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970 27 April 1971] 56590/70 and 11734/71 Heading C1M A glass which forms a clear melt, but opacifies on solidifying, consists of 60-75% w./w. SiO 2 , 8-15% B 2 O 3 , 9-17% RO, 3-7% M 2 O, 2-7% Al 2 O 3 , 1-4% F, 0-2À5% ZrO 2 and 0-4% TiO 2 where R is Ca and Ba and/or Sr and/or Mg and/or Zn, Ca comprising at least part and preferably at least 60% of R, and M is Na, K and/or Li, Na preferably comprising at least 75%. The product preferably has an opacity number (defined) of at least 5 and a viscosity of 10<SP>3.2</SP> poise at at least 20‹ C. above the upper separation temperature (defined). The thermal expansion coefficient between 20 and 400‹ C. is preferably not more than 65.10<SP>-7</SP>/‹ C. In the preparation the molten glass may be cooled very rapidly for solidification, e.g. 500‹ C./second, from 1100- 1250‹ C. to about 700‹ C.
