Abstract

1313750 Microspheres UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 23 Dec 1970 [10 Oct 1969] 49998/69 Heading C1A [Also in Division G6] Oxide or carbide microspheres are produced by mixing an aqueous solution or sol containing a metal salt or oxide with a water-soluble polymeric material and an ammonium salt or formamide, with or without carbon, and introducing drops of the mixture into an aqueous alkaline solution to form gel microspheres. The solution may contain uranyl nitrate or fluoride, uranyl nitrate + cerium ammonium nitrate, uranium + plutonium nitrates, or ZrO 2 Sol. The ammonium salt may be the nitrate, acetate, sulphate, lactate, or chloride. The polymeric material may be a starch derivative, a cellulose derivative, or polyvinyl alcohol. The alkaline solution may be NH 4 OH. Where carbon is present, the gel may be calcined in an atmosphere such as to form the carbide, oxycarbide or nitrate (e.g. up to 1000‹ C. in CO 2 , then up to 1600‹C. in H 2 ), or in an oxidizing atmosphere to form porous oxide. An oxide gel may be calcined in CO 2 up to 850 or 900‹ C. and then in H 2 up to 1450‹ or 1600‹ C.
