Abstract
1309340 Casting processes and moulds UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP 25 Nov 1971 [20 Jan 1971] 54797/71 Heading B3F A process for the casting of alloys to obtain ingots with a fine-grain equiaxed structure comprises melting an alloy in a crucible, slowly reducing the alloy melt temperature to induce nucleation and thereby to produce a homogenous liquid-solid slushy mixture (e.g. by stirring), pouring the slushy mixture into a mould having upper and lower zones, the temperature of the upper zone of the mould being controllable independently of the lower mould zone temperature and the lower mould zone being previously preheated to a temperature below the solidus temperature of the alloy, allowing the alloy to solidify in the lower zone while maintaining an excess of slushy alloy in the upper zone to feed the shrinkage in the cast ingot resulting during solidification. The mould employed consists of a copper stool 6 holding a ceramic mould liner 10 defining a narrowed zone 16 which functions as a hot top. A stainless steel shell 8 jackets the liner 10 and extends around the hot top at 14. Two stirring coils 12, 20 are provided. The upper coil 20 surrounding the hot top is provided with a graphite susceptor 18 and functions additionally to heat the hot top.
