Abstract

1307716 Reducing the combined sulphur content of Claus tail gases SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 29 April 1970 [1 May 1969] 20655/70 Heading C1A A process for reducing the combined sulphur content of Claus tail gases comprises cooling the tail gases to below the dew point of sulphur, removal of the elemental sulphur thus deposited, and then passing the residual gases through a bed of a catalyst which promotes the reaction of H 2 S and SO 2 to form sulphur at a temperature below the dew point of sulphur so as to deposit the sulphur formed in the catalyst bed. When the conversion falls to a limiting value the catalyst bed is reactived by passing through it a hot H 2 S-containing gas which vaporizes the elemental sulphur and removes the vapour from the catalyst bed to a condenser where the gases are cooled to deposit sulphur, said H 2 S-containing gas being substantially free from SO 2 .
