Abstract

1298155 Adhesive compositions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 2 March 1970 [28 Feb 1969] 9914/70 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] Adhesive compositions comprise an aqueous latex of a copolymer of vinyl acetate with 5 to 40 weight per cent of ethylene and a component, copolymerized in said copolymer or incorporated as a separate ingredient, capable of cross-linking said polymer at elevated temperature. Crosslinking may be effected by copolymerized N- methylol acrylamide, or by incorporating in the latex a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol and a dialdehyde, e.g. glyoxal or glutaraldehyde. The latices may also contain fillers, e.g. clay, talc, calcium silicate, magnesium silicate, calcium carbonate and wood flour; thickeners, e.g. methyl cellulose and hydroxyethyl cellulose; and wetting agents, e.g. polyphosphates; and may be used for bonding polyvinyl chloride foam backings to tufted carpets. Examples describe latices comprising (A) ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl alcohol, glyoxal and sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, together with (C) organic polyphosphates, calcium carbonate and methyl cellulose; and (B) ethylene/ vinyl acetate/N-methylol acrylamide copolymer, oxalic acid, sodium dioctyl and dihexyl sulphosuccinates and octylphenol/ethylene oxide condensates, together with (D) calcium carbonate.
