Abstract

1293682 Railway vehicle undercarriages BUDD CO 30 Jan 1970 [30 Jan 1969] 4688/70 Heading B7L A spring suspension in a railway vehicle has a pneumatic spring 35 in series with a coil spring assembly 27 consisting of an outer spring 29 and an inner spring 30, which spring assembly 27 is mountable between a floor beam structure 13 of the vehicle body and a wheeled frame or truck 20. The pneumatic spring 35 is formed by a floating spring seat 37 having walls 42, 43, which spring seat 37 rests on the upper end of the spring assembly 27 and a housing 36 having walls 40, 41, which housing 36 is supported by the structure 13, the spring seat 37 and the housing 36 having a space 12 between them which is sealed off by a ring of elastomeric material 39. The ring 39 surrounds the spring assembly 27 and permits vertical movement of the spring seat 37 relative to the housing 36 while restraining horizontal movement relative thereto. The ends of the coil springs 29, 30 have core flanged positioning plates 31, 32 and and the plate 32 carries the pneumatic spring 35. An air supply to the spring 35 is provided via a conduit 47 extending from a fitting 48 opening into a reservoir R.2, formed by a bolster 22, to a fitting 94 extending through the wall 41 of the housing 30. The material of elastomeric ring 39 is such that it yields readily in shear vertically but is substantially incompressible transversely of the walls 41, 43. If air pressure within the spring 35 is reduced, then the elastomeric ring 39 deflects in shear until a resilient bumper pad 44 contacts the wall 40 and an auxiliary horizontal restraint 53 serves a similar function to pad 44. In a further embodiment, described with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown), the spring seat (361) is formed as part of the vehicle body side sill structures (11<SP>1</SP>) and a hollow truck bolster (22<SP>1</SP>) forms an auxiliary air reservoir (R2<SP>1</SP>) for the air spring (35<SP>1</SP>).
