Abstract

1289863 Extruding foamed plastics ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 13 Oct 1969 [21 Oct 1968] 50140/69 Heading B5A Extruded foamed thermoplastic articles having longitudinally extending portions of differing density, i.e. portions which are non- foamed or where relatively little foaming has taken place, are made using an extrusion die having two or more material-flow passages, at least one of which allows a degree of expansion of resin therein different to that for resin in another passage. The denser portions are formed by applying a relatively greater pressure and/or a relatively lower temperature and additionally the material forming the portions may be degassed, e.g. by using a die having passage(s) of sintered metal. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, pressure differences in passages 4, 5 are obtained by the provision of upstream conduits 7, 8 of different diameters. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), conduits 8 are at the downstream end of the die and further embodiments, Figs. 3-7 (not shown), describe the formation of annular, U-cross section and plate-like relatively unfoamed portions. Cooling of the die is preferably adjacent or towards its downstream end and the die may be associated with a cooled sizing die. Thermoplastic polymers specifically mentioned are, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, P.V.C. copolymers and A.B.S. copolymers.
