Abstract

1289083 Polymer coating compositions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 13 Jan 1970 [30 Jan 1969] 1718/70 Headings C3B B1D2C B1N1A and B1N13B Compositions for coating silica substrates comprise (A) a copolymer of 55 to 97 wt. per cent of ethylene units and 3 to 45 wt. per cent of C 3 - 8 α, #-ethylenically unsaturated acid units 5 to 75 per cent of which have been neutralized with metal ions; (B) 1 to 25 wt. per cent based on (A) of a cross-linking agent which is an epoxy resin, urea/ formaldehyde resin or hexalkoxymethyl melamine resin; and (C) 0À1 to 40 wt. per cent based on (A) of an organic silane having at least two hydrolyzable groups attached to the silicon atom. Preferred copolymers contain 5 to 15 per cent of methacrylic acid of which 10 to 60 per cent is neutralized with sodium ions. Preferred crosslinking agents include epichlorohydrin/Bisphenol A condensates and hexamethoxymethyl melamine. The silane may be chloropropyl trimethoxysilane, gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, gammamethacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane, methyl trimethoxysilane, vinyl trimethoxysilane and tetraethylorthosilicate. The compositions may be applied to glass fibres and cured by heating prior to incorporation of the fibres in hydrocarbon resin moulding materials, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene or polystyrene. Examples describe coating compositions comprising aqueous dispersions of ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymers partially neutralized with sodium ions, sodium oleate and chloropropyl trimethoxysilane or tetraethylorthosilicate and (1 and 2) hexamethoxymethyl melamine, (3) epichlorohydrin/Bisphenol A condensate and (4) urea/formaldehyde resin; and the incorporation of treated glass fibres in polyethylene.
