Abstract

1287585 Cutting strips of biscuits or confectionery product CADBURY BROS Ltd 30 Jan 1970 [11 Feb 1969] 7272/69 Heading A2A [Also in Division B5] A strip of confectionery product, e.g. caramel, or biscuit is cut into pieces by impingement of a jet of fluid at a pressure sufficient to cut through the strip, and pieces of required shape are formed by moving the jet relatively to the strip. The apparatus shown comprises a pair of endless belts 10, 11 driven by pulleys 16 so that their upper, operative runs 12 move in the same direction, and providing a gap where they pass over supports 13 carried by a movable base unit 14. The belts also run over pulleys 15 carried by the base unit and over tensioners 17. A head 18 has a row of equi-spaced orifices 19 for high pressure fluid, e.g. at 12,000 p.s.i., positioned over the gap and is mounted on the base unit so as to be movable at right angles to the direction of movement of the belts. The spacing of the outermost orifices is equal to the width of the strip to be cut less the width of one piece to be cut therefrom. In operation, the head is positioned initially so that one of the orifices coincides with an edge of the strip and the base unit is moved against the direction of movement of the belts to make longitudinal cuts in the strip, after which the base unit is moved in the same direction and at the same speed as the belts whilst the head is moved laterally to make transverse cuts equal in number to the number of orifices. The base unit is then moved against the direction of movement of the belts to make further longitudinal cuts, after which the cycle is completed by lateral movement of the head back to its starting position whilst the base unit moves in the same direction as the belts. The cutting fluid, generally a liquid, may be water or a fat which forms one of the constituents of the strip, and a tray 20 collects fluid from the orifices and particles of strip. The belt 11 may be formed from canvas etc. and the belt 10 from chain.
