Drilling-machines. - A multiple drilling-machine provided with the usual drill operating and feeding mechanism is adapted for drilling ships' plates &c. by fitting a plate-traversing mechanism and a radial drill or drills. The plate P, Fig. 3, is supported by transversely adjustable clamps p on carriages 0, N, the latter being intermittingly advanced by a split nut in engagement with a screw m<2> which is driven through change gearing m<4> by a shaft m<3> to which a definite angular movement is imparted by hand or by connexion with the feedgear for the drills. The multiple drills B, only one of which is shown, are driven by a motor C through gearing c<1>, b<3>, b<2>, and are fed axially by clutches d<3>, Fig. 1, any of which may be opened, and gearing from the shaft D which can be rotated by a hand-wheel F or by change gear d<2>, d<1> from the driven shaft b<1>. The drills B can be adjusted transversely as a whole by a screw E and handle e<1> or individuallv on the frame a<2> to vary their spacing. The radial drills K, Fig. 3, are driven from the shaft b<1> through belt gearing h<1>, shaft H, and the gearing shown, and are employed for drilling special holes such as p<5> and for rows p<4> if nearer another longitudinal row than two adjacent drills B. The gear for feeding the drills B is provided with an adjustable device which stops the feed when the necessary depth is attained.
