Abstract

1282551 Starch complexes S NEUMANN 29 May 1969 [4 June 1968 30 July 1968] 26568/68 and 36284/68 Heading C3U [Also in Division D2] Starch is dissolved or suspended in water, and precipitated, preferably in the presence of fibres, by bringing the solution or suspension to a neutral or alkaline pH in the presence of a multivalent metal cation capable of forming an insoluble complex with starch at that pH. The multivalent metal may be magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, zinc, aluminium or mixtures of these. The starch used may be pure starch, or a flour, e.g. of wheat, sago or tapioca. In the latter case, other materials such as gluten may be precipitated along with the starch. Alkylated, pre-galatinized, esterified or oxidized starches may be used. The starch may be dissolved by heating with water and thereafter precipitated by adding a solution of hydroxide of the complexing metal, or of a salt of the metal followed by an alkali-metal or alkaline-earth-metal hydroxide or ammonia. Alternatively, it may be dissolved by treatment with an alkali or ammonia, and precipitated by a hydroxide or salt of the complexing metal, with adjustment of pH if necessary. Preferably, however, it is brought into solution by treatment with a neutral or acidic compound of the complexing metal, and precipitated by adjustment of pH.
