Abstract
1278891 Aerials MARCONI CO Ltd 24 Nov 1970 [18 April 1970] 18642/70 Heading H4A An aerial array consists of a plurality of elements which are arranged along a circular arc, and it is associated with a feeder system providing electronic scanning. The aerial elements are divided into sets each containing the same plurality of adjacent, equally spaced elements. Each unit consists of a plurality of different corresponding aerial elements, at least one in each set. A power dividing feeder system is divided into unit feeder arrangements, each leading through switch means and phase shifters, which are adjusted to determine the general direction of radiation, to selectable pairs of aerial elements in different units. An adjustable phase shifter means is also provided in the path to at least one of the two units fed by each unit feeder arrangement for adjusting the power division between the unit, and each such arrangement includes a four-port-3dB coupler. The two ports of each coupler remote from the aerial are respectively connected to first and second binary branching arrangements, an adjustable phase-shifter means being interposed in the connection to the second branching arrangement. In operation, sum radiation pattern signals are obtainable by the first binary branching arrangement, and difference radiation pattern signals are obtainable by the second binary branching arrangement. As described, a plurality n of aerial elements is arranged around the circumference of a circle and is divided into three sets (a 1 to a n/3 ), (b 1 to b n/3 ), (c 1 to c n/3 ), each of which is disposed along a 120 degree arc of the circle. A unit consists of one corresponding aerial element from each set, and for feeding purposes the units are associated in pairs containing the aerial elements (a i , b i , c i ) and (a i+n/6 , b i+n/6 , c i+n/6 ) respectively, where i is an integer from 1 to n/6. Switches (Si, S i+n/6 ), Fig. 3, enable any element from one unit to be selected with any element from the other unit and to be connected through respective adjustable phase shifters # i , # i+n/6 to respective output ports of a - 3dB coupler D i . One input port of the coupler D i is directly connected to an output of a binary power divider B 1 and the other input port is connected through a two-bit (zero or # radians) phase shifter P i to an output of a binary power divider B 2 . Reference is made to Specification 1,171,626.
