Abstract
1275905 Gas analysis PILKINGTON BROS Ltd, D CRITCHLEY, F DAWBER and K F GRAINGER 14 Oct 1969 [1 Nov 1968] 51863/68 Heading G1B A gas sampling probe for use in withdrawing a sample of the atmosphere existing in the headspace of a glass melting furnace, comprises a sampling tube 2 having a closed inner end which is inserted into the atmosphere to be sampled, the tube having at least one, and preferably two lateral openings 3 near the closed end for communication with the atmosphere, a steam supply line 5 extending through the tube 2 and terminating at an ejector nozzle block 6, situated in the region of the opening or openings 3, the block 6 (shown enlarged in Fig.2) being provided with ejector nozzle bores 17 parallel with the tube 2 whereby steam issuing from the bores 17 draws a sample of the atmosphere into the tube 2 by an ejector effect. The sampling tube 2 is surrounded by a cooling water jacket comprising an outer cylindrical jacket 18 closed at its end and a concentric partition 20. Water outlet and inlet pipes 23, 24 provide for the circulation of coolant within the water jacket. Small pipes (not shown) extend through the water jacket and lead to the openings 3. The ejector nozzle block 6 is provided with a cap 11 having an inner concave surface which assists in the flow of steam from the line 5 to the bores 17. The steam draws a sample of the atmosphere through the openings 3 and this passes to a conduit 25 to a gas analyser by way of a condenser. Analysis may be conducted for any gas not soluble in water, and in the described embodiment oxygen is determined and the obtained measured value is used to control the combustion in the furnace. A valve (not shown) is provided in the conduit 25 and by closing this at intervals steam is forced to issue from the openings 3 thus preventing any deposition in these openings which would affect the use of the probe. Condensation in the probe tube 2 may be prevented by mounting it in the furnace with an upward inclination of about 15 degrees to the horizontal.
