Abstract

1,273,364. Gas burner; combustion apparatus. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 4 Sept., 1970 [5 Sept., 1969], No. 44170/69. Headings F4B and F4T. A combustion device for use with liquefied petroleum gas comprises a combustion chamber 1 substantially formed as a body of revolution and open at the downstream end and a coaxial burner 2, the fuel and air supplies of the burner debouching into the upstream end of the combustion chamber, an annular primary air channel 8 and fuel supply pipes 15 supplying flame chamber 3 surrounded by an annular secondary air supply, baffle plate 10 dividing the combustion air into determined proportions of primary and secondary air, an expansion chamber 11 being provided to decrease the velocity of the secondary air, and preferably a perforated plate 12 ensuring uniform distribution of the secondary air stream. Annular primary air opening 5 is surrounded by annular gas opening 4, connected to expansion chamber 16 and swirl means 17, and is adjustable by axial displacement of a central barrel 18 with a conical end, the primary air exit and the gas exit being frusto-conically shaped, and the gas exit narrowing in crosssection. A mixing throat 20 keeps combustion stable, together with axial adjustment of flame chamber 3 by means of rods 19. Pressurized combustion air is supplied through common inlet 7 by a fan, and may be preheated by passage through the refractory lining 22 of the combustion chamber, an outflow throat 26 accelerating the exhaust gases to produce high heating rates. In an alternative embodiment, as in Fig. 2 (not shown), the baffle plate 10 is axially adjustable within a frusto-conical part (24) so that the ratio of primary air to secondary air may be varied.
