Abstract

1,271,869. Resiliently mounted seats. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. Oct.30, 1970 [Nov.25, 1969], No.57493/69. Heading A4U. A vehicle seat comprises a seat-supporting frame 13, resiliently supported by a torsion bar 24 and parallel spaced scissors levers 16, 17 for vertical movement relatively to a base 14, and a seat assembly 10 mounted in the frame 13, front and rear parts of the assembly being independently vertically adjustable relatively to the frame to adjust the height and inclination of the seat. A ratchet device at the front of the seat consists of a pawl 37 pivoted at 38 to the assembly 10 and having cranked ends 37b urged by a spring 39 into a selected lateral portion 36b of a slot 36a in plates 36 mounted vertically at the sides of the frame 13 and permits the front part of the seat to be raised by lifting and prevents downward movement until the ends 37b of the pawl are moved into the vertical part of the slot 36a by manual operation of the pawl by a cranked central handle portion. The rear of the seat is adjusted by selective engagement of pins 41 on the frame 13 in lateral portions 40b of slots 40a in plates 40 secured to the assembly 10, by lifting the seat upwardly and rearwardly, the pin being retained in the selected slot partly by the weight of the user and partly by the spring bias of the pawl 37. The inclination of a back assembly 26, which includes a rigid cushion support 28 pivoted on a horizontal axis in a back support member 30, rigid with the frame 13, is adjusted by selective, spring-urged engagement of an abutment 31 on the member 28 in a rack 32 pivoted to the member 30. One end of the torsion bar 24 is connected to the frame 13 via a screw coupling 25 for varying the torsion in the bar and the other end to rearward ends of the scissors lever 17, 17<SP>1</SP>.
