Abstract
1,270,756. Ammonia synthesis gas. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 9 April, 1970 [19 April, 1969], No. 16990/70. Heading C1A. Ammonia synthesis gas is produced by (A) cracking a hydrocarbon in two stages: (a) by indirectly heating to 750-900C. at a pressure of at least 30 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and reacting in the presence of a nickel catalyst with 1À5-3 moles steam per mole and number of C atoms per molecule of hydrocarbon, and (b) by partially oxidizing the primary cracked hydrocarbon with an oxygen fraction obtained in the production of nitrogen from air; (B) converting the carbon monoxide of the cracked gas to carbon dioxide; (C) absorbing the CO 2 in methanol at less than 0 C. and (D) scrubbing the thusobtained gas with the liquid nitrogen obtained in the air separation. The methanol may be regenerated by flashing and stripping with air or with the gas mixture obtained evaporating the liquid nitrogen from step (D) (CH 4 , CO and Ar). Residual gas from the regeneration is mixed with fuel used to heat the reactor in step (a).
