A corrugated board is slit into strips which are then cut transversely into sheets B, Fig. 2, and delivered on to a conveyer belt 25 from a cutting machine conveyer C moving more rapidly, the sheets thus being conveyed in overlapping relationship to an auxiliary conveyer belt 53 which delivers them to a take-up table 162, the outlet end of the belt 53 being raised by an hydraulic actuator as the stacks on the table 162 increase in height. The sheets are pressed on to the belts by rollers 29, 29<SP>1</SP>. Between the belts 25, 53, Figs. 2 and 5, there is provided a gate mechanism 34 comprising a rectangular gate plate 81 bent forwardly at its lower part 81<SP>1</SP>, which plate is lowered by gravity to the position of Fig. 5, wherein it blocks the advance of sheets B. Associated with the gate plate is a deflector plate 134 and a presser bar 133 which in the lowest gate position allows one sheet to pass under it up to the gate. The gate is raised by an air cylinder through a chain 159, first to an intermediate position allowing the passage of one sheet, the plate 134 and bar 133 remaining in their lowest position due to a lost motion connection between them and the gate, and then to an uppermost position, the plate 134 and bar 133 also moving upwards, to allow several sheets, previously held against the plate 134 to pass on to the belt 53. The bar 133 and the inclination of the plate portion 81<SP>1</SP> prevents the leading edge of a sheet being carried upwards as the gate rises.
