Abstract

1,268,547. Making combustion chambers and nozzles; welding by fusion; soldering. MESSERSCHMITT-BOLKOW G.m.b.H. 3 June, 1969, No. 28103/69. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division F1] Cooling channels 2 formed in the wall of a combustion chamber or nozzle of a rocket propulsion unit are sealed by rods 3. The rods 3 are secured to the ribs 4 between the cooling channels 2 by adhesive, welding, brazing or soldering. The rods 3 are correctly positioned by inserting flexible spacers (5a, 5b) (Figs. 1 and 4, not shown) into each channel 2. Alternatively, the rods 3 are provided with shoulders 9 or spaced elements 12 which engage the upper surfaces 10 of the ribs 4 or the rods 3 may rest on steps 11 in the rib walls. Prior to joining, the rods 3 are pressed into position by a roller (14) moving in front of a welding device (13) or clamping strips 15, may be wrapped around the combustion chamber or nozzle. The joining methods include electron beam welding, protective gas welding, diffusion, soldering or soldering by using a soldering foil or bar or by depositing solder layers by evaporation.
