Abstract

1,266,246. Methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate copolymer dispersions. ROHM G.m.b.H. 16 Oct., 1969 [19 Oct., 1968], No. 50914/69. Heading C3P. An aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and n-butyl acrylate and optionally, up to 20% (based on the weight of the two main monomers) of at least one other unsaturated comonomer, having a mean particle size and particle size distribution such that upon centrifuging an aqueous dispersion of the copolymer (adjusted to 10% solids content) for 15 mins. at 20‹ C. and 10,000 g., a sediment of 20 to 50% by weight of the copolymer is obtained, is made by copolymerization of an aqueous emulsion of the above monomers, the methyl methacrylate and the n-butyl acrylate being present in a weight ratio of from 10 : 90 to 60 : 40, the copolymerization being carried out under such conditions that the above sedimentation property is attained, an emulsifier being present in an initial amount (as polymerization begins) which is preferably 0À5 to 3 times its critical micelle-forming concentration. The copolymerization is at least partially effected in the presence, in an aqueous medium, of atleast 3% by weight, based on the aqueous medium of the emulsifier. Further emulsifier may be added on completing the polymerization. The emulsifier is preferably an alkali metal, or ammonium salt of at least one sulphated fatty alcohol, aromatic sulphonic acid, sulphonated ethylene oxide adduct or, preferably, at least one sulphated lower ethoxylated alkyl phenol, or a non-ionic type such as at least one ethoxylated fatty alcohol, fatty acid amide or alkylphenol. Examples describe the preparation of dispersions of copolymers of methylmethacrylate, nbutyl acrylate and (1), (2) and (4) N-methylolmethacrylamide; (3), (5) and (8), N-methylolmethacrylamide, and methacrylamide; (6) N- methylol methacrylamide and 2,2-dimethylpropanediol-1,3-dimethacrylate; (7) N-methylolmethacrylamide, methacrylamide and butanediol-1,4-dimethacrylate; (9), (10), methacrylic acid and (11) styrene and methacrylic acid, with named emulsifiers and a catalyst of ammonium peroxydisulphate.
