Abstract

1,258,412. Dyeing process and polymerization. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 16 April, 1969 [17 April, 1968 (2)], Nos. 18103/68 and 11951/69. Divided out of 1,252,453. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] Polymeric materials, e.g. cotton, wool, silk, cellulose acetate, polyamides, polyurethane, polyesters and polyacrylonitrile are dyed or printed with a dyestuff containing one or more chromophoric residues, one or more polymerizable olefinically unsaturated groups and one or more fibre reactive groups other than the polymerizable olefinically unsaturated groups in the presence of a polymerization initiator. The fibre reactive group may be a mono or di halogenotriazinyl or di or tri-halogenopyrimidyl group, of which there may be 1-4, the polymerizable olefinically unsaturated group is preferably and α,#-unsaturated acyl group, or a group of Formula I in which R is hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group, A is an α,#-unsaturated acyl group, each of the groups X being hydrogen or a monovalent group, the aryl group being part of the chromophoric system, 1-4 of these groups may be present. The polymerization initiator may be present as 1-500% of the dye used and may be applied together with, before or after the dyestuff, specific examples being hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, 4,4-azo-bis (4 cyanopentanoic acid), X-rays, ultra-violet and gamma ray sources.
