Abstract
1,254,447. Machine tool details. SUNDSTRAND CORP. 18 Nov., 1968 [20 Nov., 1967], No. 29062/71. Divided out of 1,254,445. Heading B3B. [Also in Division G3] A control system for a plurality of machine tools each using a plurality of tools for performing different machining operations on a part comprises means for transporting tools from a central supply to any of the machine tools. As shown, Fig. 1, numerically controlled machine tools 20, each of which is a general purpose multi-axis machine tool capable of boring, milling and drilling, are supplied with parts 25 on pallets 26 from a common parts storage conveyer 40. The machine tools are controlled by an on-line computer 30. The parts 25 are supplied to a machine tool by a pneumatic, or hydraulic, ram 44 transferring a pallet to conveyer 70. The storage conveyer is searched by a selected read unit commanded by the computer and the part transferred by the ram and rollers to the machine tool. The finished part is returned to the storage conveyer. Collisions at intersections between rollers and conveyers are prevented by controlling transfer by gates 137 held closed by the interruption of a light beam 135. The computer 30 retains in its memory the instantaneous location of all parts and tools in the system and effects control of the machine tools accordingly. The parts storage loop 40 is fed from a warehouse arm 250, comprising conveyers 255 each holding a different basic part, from an input conveyer 60. The computer memory is updated in synchronism with movement of parts at photo-electric stations 134 reading process indicia on a work-piece. Transfer to a further parts loop is effected by a conveyer 61. The appropriate tools for the programme are selected from a fixed storage area 269 for each machine or from a tool conveyer 81 via a temporary storage conveyer 85. Tool transfer, Fig. 3, each shared tool is mounted in a car 83, running on rails 280, which is transferred to conveyer 85 by a ram extending a pair of short tracks across slots in rails 280. The car is disengaged from rails 280 and rolls along rails 300 by gravity until it strikes the legs 340 of a U-shaped member 342. The tool is then transferred to the spindle, not shown, of the machine tool by a conventional tool-changer 87 having a Y-shaped end claw 380. The member 342 is moved, to correctly position the car adjacent to the claw 380, by a motor, energized by the computer 30, driving a lead-screw 360. When the tool is returned to its car, the computer energizes the motor 350 in the appropriate direction to correctly position the car carrying the used tool in the machining programme. When the programme is complete the member 342 is withdrawn and the cars returned to the conveyer 80 through a gate 230. A tool is removed from the storage arm 269 by rotation under command of the computer and raising the tool by a ram to the level of the claw 380.
