Abstract

1,250,737. Antiskid brake systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 19 Feb., 1970 [13 March, 1969], No. 7934/70. Heading F2C. In a method of controlling a brake pressure modulator 100 in an antiskid system the velocity of a braked wheel is sensed by a tachogenerator to produce a first signal on a line 28 simulating wheel deceleration during braking and a timedelayed second signal simulating vehicle deceleration, the two signals being compared to sense incipient wheel lock-up and produce an output signal which controls the modulator. The frequency signal from the tachogenerator 12 is fed to a frequency-to-voltage converter 18 and differentiated to produce an acceleration signal. Spurious signals due to wheel hop following brake application are overcome by providing a bias signal by means of a pulser 74 and an acceleration switch 78 causes brake application whenever wheel acceleration exceeds a predetermined value. The modulator 100 has an hydraulic portion 102 including a piston 126 moving in a bore 124 under the influence of a pneumatic chamber 104 divided by a diaphragm 106 having a rigid backing 108 and connected to a vacuum source 118 via a conduit 116 and to a valve 86 via a conduit 114, the valve being operated by a solenoid 84 energized by the control circuit so that sensing of an incipient wheel lock condition causes the piston 126 to be moved to allow a check valve 146 to close and isolate the, brakes from the master cylinder and to increase the volume within the bore 124 to reduce the braking pressure.
