Abstract
1,250,213. Modifying characters for photoelectric scanning purposes. DR. ING. RUDOLF HELL. 8 Nov., 1968 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 53172/68. Heading G5C. [Also in Division B6] A character or pattern, intended to be photoelectrically scanned in e.g. a phototype-setting process (and therefore required to be formed in a regular digital-type pattern), is formed by: (i) providing a transparency sheet 2 bearing a character; (ii) superposing it on a raster grid pattern 1 carried on a separate surface; (iii) adjusting the sheet so that as many as possible of the straight edge lines of the character coincide with the grid lines; (iv) removing from or adding to those portions of the character bounded by straight edge lines which do not coincide with the grid lines, until they do so coincide. As described, step (iv) (above) is achieved by scraping away or blocking in parts of the character or, as shown, by relatively moving pieces of sheet 2 defined by separation lines 3, 4. Where, as at 5, the character is defined by acutely-converging lines, it is cut away as at 6 to leave the raster elemental areas blank. Code marks 7 denote e.g. character height or storage instructions.
