Abstract

1,247,684. Polymer-containing gelatin-silver halide photographic emulsions. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. Jan. 7, 1969 [Jan. 8, 1968], No. 1147/68. Heading G2C. A gelatin-silver halide photographic emulsion contains at least one substantially water-insoluble polymer whose structure includes repeating units of the formula: - wherein R is alkyl containing 2 to 6 carbons, R<SP>1</SP> is H, or an alkyl group having up to 6 carbons, and n is an integer of at least 2, preferably 2 to 6. R<SP>1</SP> is preferably H or methyl. The emulsion preferably contains up to 100g of the polymer per mole of silver, and preferably 5 to 200g of gelatine per mole of silver. The emulsion may contain at least one of the polymers poly (ethoxyethyl methacrylate), poly (ethoxyethyl acrylate), poly (butoxyethyl methacrylate), poly (butoxyethyl acrylate), poly (hexoxyethyl methacrylate) and poly (hexoxyethyl acrylate). These emulsions contain relatively small amounts of gelatine so that they can be rapidly dried and do not give grainy images on development. The polymer may be added in place of some of the gelatine or in addition to the gelatine.
