Abstract
1,244,895. Alumina refractories; phosphate modified alumina. DRESSER INDUSTRIES Inc. 8 Aug., 1969 [14 Oct., 1968], No. 39834/69. Headings C1A and C1J. A brick containing at least 45% Al 2 O 3 is obtained from a batch of (a) a calcined Al 2 O 3 refractory, (b) sodium aluminate (this can be a refractory containing only a minor amount of it, e.g. a calcined Al 2 O 3 containing 0À5% Na 2 O; or # Al 2 O 3 ), (c) 0-5% Al 2 O 3 , 3H 2 O and (d) phosphoric acid equivalent to 1-6% P 2 O 5 which is shaped and then dried at above 500‹ F. to form a bond of AlPO 4 , the brick having a total alkali content (including Na 2 O from the Na aluminate) not more than 3% of the AlPO 4 . The calcined Al 2 O 3 refractory can be one or more of tabular Al z Og, fused Al 2 O 3 , bauxite, kaolin and kyanite. Component (b) + (c) preferably has a maximum of 4%. The end product may consist essentially of corundum with up to 10% AlPO 4 or of up to 10% AlP0 4 with mullite and corundum or cristobalite.
