Abstract

1,242,172. Chemically cutting glass. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 11 Feb., 1969 [23 Feb., 1968], No. 7266/69. Heading C1M. Glass is chemically cut by:- (a) depositing on the glass in the configuration to which the glass is to be cut a chemical exchange medium containing ions capable of exchanging with larger ions in the glass; (b) carrying out the ion exchange to produce a plurality of minute cracks along the configuration of the deposited medium; and (c) breaking the glass along the configuration of the medium along which the cracks have developed. The glass may be a soda lime glass, in which case the exchange medium may be 50 wt. per cent china clay, 25 wt. per cent LiNO 3 and 25 wt. per cent LiCl, made to a paste with water. The paste may be applied with a brush to give a line thickness of 1/ 64 -3/ 32 inch, and the ion exchange may be carried out by heating to 900‹ F. for approx. 30 minutes. In an alternative embodiment, however, a glass ribbon 13 emerging from a molten metal float chamber 10 (at a temperature of 1100‹ F.) is printed, by means of printing roll 20, with the above mentioned paste in the configuration of a vehicle windscreen 23, whereafter the ribbon is passed through annealing lehr 17, in which it is cooled to 200‹ F. or below. The ion exchange and crack forming occurs in the lehr and on cooling the glass is broken and the edges polished.
