Abstract
1,240,554. Anti-jack-knife devices. ISUZU MOTORS Ltd., and FUJI HEAVY INDUSTRY Ltd. 22 July, 1968 [20 July, 1967], No. 34794/68. Heading B7T. [Also in Division F2] An anti-jack.knife device on a tractor-trailer combination inclludes a couping pin 1 secured to the trailer through a support plate 6, cylinders 5, bolts 7, and a sliding plate 4, a disc 2 rotatable about the pin 1 and having on its lower surface a tooth 3 engageable with the fifth-wheel coupling of the tractor, and braking means comprising a pivoted arm 10 which presses friction elements 8 on to the disc 2 when pressure in an air chamber 11, connected to the trailer brake system, is increased. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the disc is replaced by a drum (17) braked by a pair of cam-actuated brake shoes. In another modification, Fig. 9, the braking means comprises a rotary lever 58 coupled to a fluid-filled pistoncylinder damper 54, 55, the ends of the cylinder normally communicating via a pipe 56 which is closed by solenoid valves 57 in response to a pressure rise in a trailer brake line 61. In a pneumatic brake system, Fig. 7, air pipes 33, 34 connect a brake pedal and a compressed air source respectively to a relay valve 31 which communicates with an air reservoir 32. When the pedal is depressed the pressure increase in pipe 33 operates valve 31 to supply air from the reservoir 32 to brake-operating chambers 35. The increased pressure is also communicated through a pipe 39 to a double acting check valve 38, which operates a relay valve 37 supplying compressed air from the reservoir 32 to an anti-jack-knife device 41. When the pedal is released the air in chambers 35 and the device 41 is discharged through valve 31 and a port 47. The device 41 may be operated independently of the trailer brakes by means of a switch controlled solenoid valve 42 which when operated supplies air from the reservoir 32 to the device 41 via valve 38. When the switch is turned off, exhaust ports 47 and 48 are opened.
