A method of operating a coke oven battery which is heated by the gas it produces, comprises dividing the crude gas into two streams S1, S2, using S1, after condensing water vapour and removing tar and ammonia to heat the ovens, and subjecting S2, optionally with the products removed from S1 to thermal treatment, e.g. a composition process, e.g. to raise steam, which may be used to distil ammoniacal liquor. S1 is preferably slightly greater in volume than required for heating the ovens the surplus, after purification, being added to S2. In an illustrated example there is described a plant in which the ammonia recovered, and optionally the tar, are burnt with S2, and phenol is recovered. The combustion process is operated at a temperature high enough to ensure that the products of combustion do not contain noxious compounds, and instead of steamraising, this process may be a cracking process, e.g. over a catalyst.
