Abstract

1,233,347. Centrifugal separators. PORTATEST MFG. Ltd. 23 April, 1968 [24 April, 1967], No. 12332/70. Divided out of 1,227,128. Heading B2P. [Also in Division Cl] In a centrifugal separator mounted in a pipeline 102, Fig. 1, the liquid laden gas enters a vortex tube 103 through whirl-producing radial vanes 110 mounted on a central tubular hub 109. The tube 103 is made up of sections 104, 105 spaced apart by a gap 106 communicating with an annular space 108 closed at both ends and defined between tube 103 and an outer tube 107. The space 108 communicates via a conduit 112 and the bore 111 of the tubular hub 109 with the centre of the vortical flow of gas in the tube 103 so that separated liquids is sucked with a small portion of gas through the gap 106 and the space 108, the water separating out in a pot 113 and the gas being recirculated via the conduit 112 and the bore 111 into the tube 103. The pot 113 may be provided with a float for controlling the discharge of liquid therefrom. Instead of vanes 110, a tangential inlet may be provided for the entering gas. In a modification, the separator may be vertically mounted with the inlet at the top, a portion of the annular space 108 below the gap serving as collection chamber for the liquid so that the pot 113 is dispensed with. Relative dimensions of the different parts are given.
