Abstract

1,223,030. Grinding. L. F. BLAKESLEY. 19 Nov., 1969 [28 Nov., 1968], No. 56426/68. Heading B3D. A machine for grinding cutting cylinders and bottom blocks of lawn mowers, and tools such as chisels, milling cutters and guillotine blades, comprises means 3 for supporting a workpiece to be ground, a grinding head 4, and drive means consisting of one or more driven elongate elements 18 arranged to follow a path or paths having two parallel or substantially parallel rectilinear portions along which the element or elements move(s) in opposite directions, and a carriage 20 which is connected to the grinding head and has means 30 for engaging the element or one of the elements along a selected one of the portions so as to traverse the carriage and grinding head in the selected direction. The grinding head has a wheel or the like G carried by a motor angularly adjustable on a plate 8 which is vertically adjustable by a hand wheel 4a on a carriage 5 having rollers 13, 15 engaging a slide 6. The workpiece may be mounted in a pair of stocks carried by a slideway 3 at the front of the machine. An arm 21 depends from the carriage 5 and beneath the bed of the machine and is connected to the carriage 20 having a roller 22 engaging the bed. The element 18 is in the form of an endless belt entrained over pulleys 17, 19, one of which is driven by a motor. A pair of levers 24, 25 are mounted on pivots 26, 27 on the carriage and each lever is associated with a fixed lever 28, 29, all the levers being provided with a clamping pad 30. An actuating lever 31 is disposed between the levers 24, 25 on a pivot 32 and has a pivoted end engaging a roller 34 carried by a linkage 35 movable about a pivot 36 by a control lever 38, the roller being urged by a spring 37 against the pointed end of the lever which has abutments 33 for selectively engaging the levers 24, 25. In the position shown in Fig. 5, the roller acts on lever 31 which in turn presses lever 24 towards the fixed lever 28 so that the pads 30 on those levers grip the belt 18 and cause movement of the carriage 20 and grinding head in one direction. Engagement of the control lever 38 with a stop 39 causes the actuating lever 31 to snap over so that the pads on levers 28, 29 grip the belt to move the carriage and head in the reverse direction. A further lever 42 is provided for rendering the actuating lever in operation.
