A pressure equalizing device, for particular use in an hydraulic press, comprises a single fabric pad having a thickened marginal zone extending about the whole of its periphery or a plurality of pads each having a thickened marginal zone along part of its periphery, said zones, when the pads are superimposed in the correct orientation, giving a thickened zone around the whole of the area covered by the pads. The thickness of the or each marginal zone increases from its inner to its outer edge. Where more than one pad is used the pads may be scattered throughout the other press elements and material to be pressed. Each pad can be made of one or more layers of peripherally reinforced heat resistant fabric made from cotton, metal, synthetic, or, preferably, asbestos fibres, the thickening being produced either by clipping or adhering edge strips or by incorporating more or thicker fibres into the marginal regions. In the embodiments shown in the figure, one form of pad (top right and bottom left) consists of a woven asbestos fabric having lateral thicknened regions a and b, formed by incorporating extra threads and still more extra threads respectively, and longitudinal thickened regions formed by adhering extra fabric strips. As illustrated in the top left and bottom right corners, both longitudinal and lateral margins can be formed by incorporating extra threads which are'overlapped at the corners in various ways to prevent extra thickening. The pressure equalizing pad or pads may be used in the manufacture of hardboard, chipboard, or laminates, such as plywood.
