[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A catalyst composition is prepared by reducing a complex of a nickel halide and a tertiary alkylated arylated or aralkylated phosphine, in the presence of a hydrocarbon, either (a) with an organic chlorine-containing aluminium compound, or (b) with an organic chlorinefree aluminium compound with subsequent addition of an aluminium halide.
