Abstract

1,208,641. Extrusion-laminating with wax compositions. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. 21 Aug., 1968 [14 Dec., 1967], No. 39912/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions C3 and C4-C5] Substrates are coated with wax-containing compositions having a viscosity of at least 15,000 c.p.s. at 300‹ F. by a method which comprises (a) heating the composition to 200‹ to 300‹ F., whereby it becomes a viscous liquid, (b) extruding the composition on to the substrate and (c) solidifying the composition on the substrate by operating a laminator chill roll at 15‹ to 40‹ F. below the melting point of the wax component of the composition. Specified substrates are paper, polyethylene, polypropylene and regenerated cellulose films. Preferred coating compositions comprise paraffin wax, an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and a terpene resin. Examples describe the extrusion coating of paper with compositions comprising ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymers, terpene resins and paraffin wax.
