Abstract

1,207,352. Diapers. D. TORR. 16 Oct., 1967, No. 46969/67. Heading A3V. [Also in Divisions A5 and D1] A product for absorbing liquids such as water and blood and comprising a sanitary pad, a bandage, a tampon, a disposable diaper, or a pad for protecting the bed against wetting includes fluid absorbent fibres of an organic substance selected from blood or egg albumin, starches, pectin, algin, karaya, tragacanth and guar gums and other natural and synthetic polysaccharide gums, or their derivatives, the product being capable of being flushed away by a toilet stream. The product may be formed wholly or partly of the particular fibres, which are woven or non-woven, and in particular may comprise a three layered laminate of a first ply to be positioned against the body, an intermediate ply of the woven or non-woven fibres, optionally including a surfactant, and an outer supporting ply which may be of a thicker material optionally water-proofed with resin or wax. The first and outer plies may comprise paper, gauze, cotton or a synthetic fibre material and as an alternative the intermediate ply may be non-woven and formed by spraying the particular fibres on to either the first or the outer plies. The two or three plies are fed together from rolls, pressed, and sealed together by heat or with adhesive. An example is given of the preparation of fibres from guar gum (a polymer of galactose and mannose) by forming a slurry of the gum in isopropyl alcohol, precipitating a hydrate of the gum from the slurry by adding water, and forming fibres from the hydrate either by extrusion into a coagulating bath or by further precipitation. The finished products may be provided in a roll suitably perforated so that each product, e.g. a diaper, may be separated off.
