Abstract

1,204,909. Feeding tobacco. HAUNIWERKE KORBER & CO. K.G. 21 Nov., 1967 [9 Dec., 1966], No. 52930/67. Heading A2C. [Also in Division B2] An arrangement for supplying tobacco to cigarette-making machines or other machines producing a continuous tobacco rod, comprises a supply container 25 for tobacco incorporating leaf components and rib components, a pneumatic separating duct 1 having a conveyer for a tobacco fleece, which closes the duct 1 at its upper end, means for supplying tobacco from the supply container 25 to the duct 1 and a rib collecting means 10 at the lower end for separating rib components from the mixed tobacco. As shown, tobacco is fed from the container 25 into the duct 1 by a carded feeder roll 26 and a beater roll 27 through a delivery duct 23, and the conveyer comprises an anti-clockwise rotating suction drum fleece collecting means 15. By means of a screen plate 21, suction from the interior of the drum 15 is applied to its surface 14 only in the region 18. A partition wall 31 extends the full width of the duct 1. The suction is applied to the roll 15 in a substantially closed system by a fan 13, the extracted air being returned via a tube 11 below the duct 1 which it re-enters through a screen 38 in an inlet opening 6 at the bottom end of the duct 1. The duct 1 also includes an adjustable by-pass air opening 35. The rib collecting device includes a cell wheel feeder 8. In operation, tobacco is thrown obliquely downwards into the forward part 32 of the duct 1 wherein an initial separation takes place with mainly leaf parts being transported upwards and mainly stem parts dropping downwards, further separation taking place above and below the partition wall 31, the further separated parts being returned via the rearward part 33 of the duct 1. Feed of separated tobacco. The separated tobacco falls from the non-suction-backed region 19 of the drum 15 to form a tobacco column 72 in an accumulation duct 37 from the bottom of which it is fed in conventional manner to a duct 46 of a cigarette-making machine. The duct 37 includes a vibrating wall 57, photo-electric level detectors 52, 53 and a tobacco density measuring device 61, by the combined use of which, together with the control of the tobacco feed from the feeder 22, the uniform supply of tobacco to the duct 46 can be automatically controlled.
