Abstract

1,193,909. Electromagnetic contactors. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 18 Nov., 1968 [30 Nov., 1967], No. 54591/68. Heading H1N. An electromagnetic contactor has modular contact units comprising insulating contact housings which are removable and reversably mounted in the insulating contactor housing to provide normally open or normally closed contacts as required. As shown, the insulating contactor housing 11, 13 encloses the coil assembly 29, 31, core and yoke 19 and armature 21. The latter is attached by a pin 27 to an operating member 25 provided with separate window openings 41 aligned with cavities 37 in the upper housing part 13. The modular contact units 39 each comprise an insulating housing 45 with separate terminal conductors 49 at opposite ends. The conductors 49 support fixed contacts 51 and are slotted (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) to receive securing terminal screws 44 which engage in tapped inserts 43 in the housing parts 13 and retain the contact units. In Fig. 9 a second layer of reversible contact units in a housing unit 91 secured above the housing part 13 by bolts 103, with an operating member similar to the member 25 secured to the latter by a bolt 107 and nut 87. The movable contact bridge 69 of each contact unit is supported in a window (67) in a carrier 65 with a compression spring 75 between the bridge 69 and a U-shaped spring retainer 73.
