Abstract

1,193,306. Strengthening glass chemically. BROCKWAY GLASS CO. Inc. 22 June, 1967, No. 22810/67. Heading C1M. A soda-lime glass body is strengthened by replacing O- - and/or OH- ions in the surfacelayer with F- ions, thus increasing the viscosity, and hence the strain point temperature, of the surface layer, and then cooling the body through both the surface-layer and the interior strain point temperatures. The surface-layer sets sooner than the interior glass and hence a compressive strain is produced in the surface-layer. The replacement may be achieved by contacting the body with a fluorine-containing gas or liquid, e.g. a fluorine-containing metal salt, e.g. a fluoride or fluoroborate of Sn, Pb, Zn or Ti; the contact may be at above the strain point temperature of the glass. In an example glass tubes at 1200‹ F. are sprayed with a fluorinecontaining salt solution for 20 seconds and the glass is refired at 1200‹ F. and cooled. The glass may be cooled slowly under annealing conditions; or it may be cooled more rapidly so as to produce conventional thermal tempering in addition to the surface-viscosity change effect of the present invention. The fluorine-contact may also be performed slowly or intermittently.
