Abstract
1,185,074. Oscillation dampers. FICHTEL & SACHS AG. 13 April, 1967 [16 April, 1966], No. 16977/67. Heading F2S. An oscillation damper, particularly for motor vehicles, whose damping action is variable in dependence on the loading of an associated pneumatic, or hydropneumatic, springing element not shown, comprises a piston and cylinder hydraulic damper 1, 2, 4, e.g. with a liquidgas compensating chamber 11 and two-way valves 5, 8 respectively in the piston 4 and a bottom plate 6, and a by-pass passage which is controlled by a valve 17 in a regulating housing 15, the pressure prevailing in the springing element being introduced into a control space 28 in the housing 15 through a pipe 25 and the control space pressure acting on the valve 17 through a diaphragm clamped at its periphery to the housing 15. As shown, two diaphragms 18, spaced by a distance piece 19, are clamped, with the interposition of a ring 22 with a vent 23, to the housing 15 by an end cover plate 24 the inner diaphragm 18 being connected to the valve 17 which has a conical portion 20 adapted to seat on one end of a valve bore 16 the other end of the valve 17 being guided in the bore 16, carrying a compensation diaphragm 21 with a guide pin, and being urged in an opening direction, against the pressure prevailing in the control space 28, by a spring 26. The counter force of the spring 26 can be adjusted so that the valve 17 closes when the vehicle is fully laden. The by-pass passage comprises a port 12 in a piston-rod guide 7 and which is connected to the valve bore 16 in the housing 15 by a tube 13, the housing 15 having a connection with the compensating chamber 11. The hydraulic pressure of the latter acts equally in opposite directions on the compensation diaphragm 21 and the inner diaphragm 18. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4, not shown, the valve (17) in the regulating housing (15) is located between the working space (10) and the compensating chamber (11), the recess (33) in the housing (15) and the space below the bottom plate (6) being connected to the compensation space (11) through ports (32) in the housing (15) and the port 12 and tube 13, Fig. 1, being omitted. The cone portion of the valve is replaced by a cylindrical portion (30) having longitudinal grooves of varying depth. In this arrangement the by-pass throttle is only operative when the piston travels into the cylinder.
