Abstract

1,184,591. Feeding webs. LERNER MACHINE CO. Ltd. 3 Jan., 1968 [4 Jan., 1967], No. 562/67. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] In a machine for wrapping articles in thermoplastic synthetic resin film, when the film 3 being fed to the machine from one source of supply 1 is becoming exhausted, a double-acting heat-sealing means is operated to join the film 3 to a film 10 from a second source of supply 2 and to sever the film 3 at the join and later, when the roll 2 is exhausted, is operated to join the end of film 10 to the end of a new film from roll 1. The heat sealing means comprise a horizontally-slidable sealing head 6 biased to a central position between a fixed anvil 22 and a movable anvil 23, and having two operating faces 20, 21. Film 3 travels from a reel 1 past a sensing head 4, over a guide roller 5 and between the points 21, 23 to intermittentlyoperating feed rollers 7 between which and the continuously-operating wrapping mechanism a loop of material is formed. The film 10 from a reel 2 is trained manually past a sensing head 11, and a guide roller 12, between parts 20, 22 and then up between parts 21, 23 to a clamp 13. When the reel 1 is nearly exhausted a mark or perforation in the film 3 is sensed by the head 4 and causes the anvil 23 to be moved to the left whilst the rollers 7 are stationary to press the head 6 against the anvil 22. The sealing means 21 is now brought into operation to seal the film 3 to the film 10 and to sever the films along the centre line of the seal. After withdrawal of the anvil, the film 10 is fed into the machine. The reel 1 is now removed together with the previously-clamped end of film 10 attached thereto, and a replacement reel inserted. The end of the film 3 of the replacement reel is now threaded manually between parts 23, 21 and 20, 22 and clamped at 13, so that when reel 2 becomes exhausted, the feeler 11 causes the sealing means 20 to be operated to join the replacement web 3 to the web 10 in the same manner as described above. The feelers 4, 11 may be photo-electric, electromechanical or acoustic. A pneumatic cylinder 25 or cam or solenoid means may be employed to move the anvil 23. Means may be provided to give a warning signal, which may be visual or audible, when the change-over from one reel to the other is about to take place. The apparatus may be used in a wrapping machine employing two films fed thereto, in which case, an apparatus as shown is provided for each film.
