Abstract
1,176,360. Supply circuits for discharge lamps. THORN ELECTRONICS Ltd. 11 Aug., 1967, No. 37083/67. Heading H2H. [Also in Division H1] The leaky transformer T 1 , Fig. 1, in an inverter circuit having switching transistors VT 1 , VT 2 , has its primary and secondary windings on opposite limbs of a closed magnetic circuit having air gaps Z/2 (Fig. 3) in those limbs, a magnetic shunt C, D air-gapped at y being provided between the windings. The length of gaps Z/2 is said to determine the pre-strike frequency when the transformer supplies a fluorescent lamp. The ratio of the gap y to the total main circuit gap 2 determines how much of the secondary pre-strike voltage is lost due to limbs C and D which may be wider than the core thickness and tapered at the ends. The apparatus may operate at from 5 to 50 (Kc./s.)
