Abstract

1,170,960. Coated foamable particles. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 2 July, 1968 [1 Aug., 1967], No. 35171/67. Heading B2K. [Also in Division C3] Coated particles of a foamable thermoplastic material comprising a polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer are produced by polymerising the monomer in aq. suspension in the presence of a volatile blowing agent and a bromophenyl alkenyl ether as flame-retardant in such quantity that there is incorporated in the particles 0.2-1.5% by wt. of the ether, and coating the particles with a further amount of a bromophenyl alkenyl ether such that the total content of ether in and on the foamable particles is 0.5- 3%. The blowing agent butane, pentane, hexane, cyclopentane or cyclohexane. An adhesive may be used in coating the particles and may be an ester of sorbitan in solution in an alcohol or a volatile liquid as used for the blowing agent. The ether may be pentabromophenyl allyl ether. In the example (1) foamable polystyrene beads were coated with the above ether and then a solution of sorbitan monopalmitate in methylated spirits.
