1,169,944. 3,3 - Diphenyl - propylamine derivatives. ED. GEISTLICH SÍHNE A.G. F R CHEMISCHE INDUSTRIE. 11 July, 1967 [25 Aug., 1966], No.38195/66. Heading C2C. Novel 3,3-diphenyl-propylamine derivatives of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or an alkyl radical; and R<SP>2</SP> is an alkyl radical; and the phenyl radical A optionally bears one or two substituents selected from halogen atoms and the trifluoromethyl radical; and the phenyl radical B bears one or two substituents selected from halogen atoms and trifluoromethyl, alkyl and alkoxy radicals; provided that, when A is the phenyl radical and B is the 4-methylphenyl or 4-methoxyphenyl radical, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are not both the methyl radical, and, when A is the phenyl radical and B is the 4-methylphenyl radical, B<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are not both the ethyl radical; and acid addition salts thereof are prepared (a) by reduction of a 3,3-diphenyl-prop-2-enylamine derivative of the general formula or an acid addition salt thereof, or (b) when R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, by hydrogenolysis of a 3,3-diphenyl-prop-2-enylamine derivative of the general formula wherein R<SP>3</SP> is a hydrogenolysable group, or an acid addition salt thereof. 3,3 - Diphenyl - prop - 2 - enylamine derivatives of the second and third general formul above are prepared by dehydration of the corresponding 3,3 - diphenyl - 3 - hydroxypropylamine derivatives. N,N - Dimethyl - 3,3-bis- (4 - fluorophenyl) - 3 - hydroxypropylamine is prepared by reaction of the appropriate Grignard reagent with the appropriate ketone. N-Benzyl- N - methyl - 3,3 - bis - (4 - fluorophenyl) - 3 - hydroxypropylamine is obtained by reaction of ethyl 3 - (N - benzyl - N - methylamino) propionate and the appropriate Grignard reagent.
