Abstract
1,163,804. Tubular heat exchangers. RICHMOND ENG. CO. Inc. 16 June, 1967, No. 27883/67. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger comprises a casing 20 having inlet and outlet openings 37, 38 for a first fluid for e.g. water to be heated, domeshaped headers 22, 33 for a second fluid at either end of said casing, and a heat exchange coil assembly 27 carrying a heating fluid such as steam or hot water disposed within the casing and comprising a plurality of pairs of coil units (C1, C2, C3, C4) nested together in concentric relationship, such that the coils in one coil unit of a pair are wound in the opposite sense to the other of the pair. As shown in Fig. 1, the coils are held in tube sheets 28, 30 which can be released from the casing by bolts 24, 29. In another embodiment, the end portions of one coil unit of the pair are located on a circle of the same diameter as the end portions of the outer coil unit of the pair, pairs of concentric tube rings being provided at the ends of said coil assembly having the free ends of the units secured therein, said rings being removably attached to the tube sheet, such that each pair of coil units with its ring may be removed from the casing upon removal of the attaching means and of at least one of the headers. The coil assembly consists of a plurality of concentrically disposed coil units nested within each other, which units are made up of a plurality of individual coils, for e.g. C1 is made up from coils C 1a -C1 f , the exact number depending on the heating capacity required, said units being wound alternately in opposite directions to produce mutually counteracting moments of torque on the rings and on the tube sheets.
