Abstract
1,149,305. Foam batt laminate. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 16 Feb., 1967 [17 Feb., 1966], No. 7536/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A laminate comprises a first lamina which is a batt of polyolefine yarn-like strands impregnated with a synthetic organic polymer having a fusion temperature at least 10‹ C. below the crystalline melting-point of the polyolefine strands; said strands before impregnation having a surface area greater than 2 m2/g. and each strand comprising a three-dimensional integral plexus of fibrous elements, said elements being coextensively aligned in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strand and having a structural configuration of oriented film fibrils, a film thickness of less than 4 microns, and an average electron diffraction angle of less than 90 degrees; and a second lamina which is a synthetic organic polymeric foam, said first lamina being bonded to said second lamina. A further compacted batt or a metal, e.g. aluminium or copper foil or an organic polymeric foil, e.g. a polystyrene foil may be applied to the other surface of the foil. Specified polyolefines are polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene - octene copolymers, poly - 4 - methyl pentene - 1 and mixtures thereof. Specified impregnants which may be applied to the batt in dispersion, in solution or in the melt are polystyrene, polybutene sulphone, styrene - butadiene copolymers, polyvinyl chloride, polymethyl methacrylate and polypropylene, optionally admixed with fillers, pigments, dyes and stabilizers. Specified foams are polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene and polyurethane. The batt is preferably compacted prior to bonding to the foam, e.g. by heating the impregnated batt under pressure. Lamination of the batt to the foam by heat and/or an adhesive, preferably whilst maintaining the laminµ under compression, the exemplified adhesive being polystyrene.
