Abstract

1,148,949. Cable reels. STEEL CONSTRUCTION & ENG. CO. (NOTTS) Ltd. 4 Dec., 1967 [23 Dec., 1966], No. 57618/66. Heading B8M. A cable reel comprises a hollow cylindrical metal drum 2 and a pair of annular metal side members 6 each of which has an inner rim consisting of a divergent channel-section ring 17 which nests with a similar divergent channelsection ring 9 at each end of the drum, the side members 6 being removably secured to the drum 2. In a preferred embodiment bolts pass through holes in the webs 20 of the rings 17 and into tapped holes in the webs 14 of the rings 9. The rings of the side members are preferably braced by a cruciform of channelsections, which cruciform provides means for mounting the reel on a spindle. Locating lugs may be provided on the rings of the drum to engage the cruciform to ensure alignment of the bolt holes in the rings 17 and 9. The outer rim of the side members 6 is preferably of 1-section and the side members may be flat annular plates or arcuate plates forming an annulus. The side members may alternatively be corrugated, the corrugations being narrower and shallower at the outer rim compared with the inner rim. Means may be provided on the side members or the drum for anchoring of the cable.
