Abstract

1,139,405. Clay-bound molecular sieves. FARBENFABRIK WOLFEN VEB. 1 March, 1966, No. 8948/66. Heading C1A. Formed molecular sieve bodies are made by adding a clay to one or more of the reactants for the synthesis of the zeolite or to the reaction mixture, before, during or after the crystallization of the zeolite, and forming the mixture of zeolite and clay into the molecular sieve bodies which may be dried and calcined up to 750‹ C. The clay is preferably added in an amount of 5-30% by weight, of the expected yield of zeolite. The moist zeolite-clay mixture obtained after separation of the liquid phase of the reaction mixture may be subjected to ion exchange, although it is preferred to suck the mixture dry first. The clay may be a kaolinite, illite, halloysite, montmorillonite, attapulgite, palygorskite, bentonite or a mixed clay. Ions in the zeolite may be exchanged for metal ions of Groups I, II, III, VIA, VIIA or VIII of the Periodic System. Examples refer to the following in admixture with clay: sodium zeolite A, manganese zeolite A, potassium zeolite 3A, sodium zeolite 13X, calcium zeolite (10X), silver zeolite X, sodium zeolite Y and synthetic mordenite.
