Abstract
1,105,121. Magnetic fastenings, PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. 22, March, 1965 [24, March, 1964], No. 11992/65. Heading E2A. A magnetic fastening for use in a door or like pivoted closure member comprises a bolt 1 which is slidable and tiltable in a housing 40 for mounting on the door or the like and co-operates magnetically with a keeper 2 for mounting on a jamb wherein the keeper is provided with a wedge shaped ramp 24 the arrangement being such that in use when the door or the like is opened the bolt is first tilted by a shoulder of the ramp and after the bolt has reached a given tilted position it slides over the ramp upon further movement of the door or the like by virtue of the wedge shape of said ramp and is thus pushed back into the housing. In the construction in Fig. 1 the bolt comprises a permanent magnet 4 which is provided on two opposite sides with pole pieces 5 and 7. The pole piece 7 has an arm 8 which includes a screw 9 having a hemispherical head 10, the head 10 in the closed position of the door or the like being behind a hole 11 in the housing 40. Pivotally mounted in the housing is a pawl 12 having a lug 13 which in the fastening position of the bolt bears on the pole piece 7. Longitudinally movable brackets 17, 18 secured to the housing 40 is a shaft 14 having knobs 15 and 16 at its ends. The shaft is biassed by a helical spring 19 which is trapped between a collar 20 on the shaft and a lug 22 slidable on the shaft and which bears on the pawl 12. The shaft also carries a fixed lug 23 which in the normal position of the shaft prevents movement of the pawl 12 to unfasten the door or the like the shaft is moved longitudinally by pulling on the knob 16 or pushing the knob 15 and this moves the lug 23 away from the pawl 12 so that the pawl can pivot. The shaft 14 moves the door or the like and this causes the bolt 1 to tilt slightly relative to the keeper on its corner adjacent the ramp 24; this movement brines the head 10 of the screw 9 into contact with the housing and further tilting of the bolt takes place with the head 10 as a fulcrum; the tilting movement pivots the pawl 12 and this compresses the spring 19 via the lug 20. Further tilting movement causes the bolt to run up the wedge shaped ramp and this slides the bolt into a guide 6 in the housing until it clears the wedge shaped ramp when the door can be opened. When the door is sufficiently opened so that the bolt is out of contact with the keeper and the shaft is released the spring 19 restores the shaft to its original position and through the pawl 12 the bolt is tilted back into contact with a vertical wall of the guide and when the door is closed the attraction of the bolt for the keeper slides the bolt into contact with the keeper to fasten the door. In a modification a cam is substituted for the pawl, the cam being rotated by means of a pinion which engages a rack on the shaft 14 to release the bolt for tilting. The cam restores the bolt to its position into contact with the vertical wall of the guide when the door is in open position.
