Abstract
1,104,461. Spray-producer. SOC. ANON DE MACHINES ELECTROSTATIQUES. 24 Sept., 1964 [27 Sept., 1963], No. 38172/63. Heading B2F. A pneumatic atomizer for spraying liquids, e.g. paint, comprises an atomizing annular chamber 2a, Fig. 1, to which a liquid to be sprayed and a gas are fed through respective inlets 4, 3, a plurality of outlets 5 in a circular path and a source of d.c. potential 6. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 paint is supplied to an annular atomizing chamber 15 through a metal-lined bore 18 and passages 16 whilst compressed air is passed to the chamber via an inlet 21, an annular cavity 20, holes 19 and passages 17. The atomized mixture issues to the atmosphere in a fan-like formation through passages 23, dispersed in a disc member 22, a chamber 27 and a slot 26. The metal lining 28 of the bore 18 is connected to a d.c. potential which may be of the order of 100 KV. In a modified form of this apparatus the disc member 22 and the nozzle member 25 embodying the chamber 27 and slot 26 are replaced by a single nozzle member incorporating spray discharge passages inclined to the axis of the bore 18 and connecting directly to the annular chamber 15. In a further modification the disc member 22 and nozzle member 25 are replaced by a single nozzle member having an annular cavity which axially extends the annular chamber 15 the outer extremity of this cavity communicating with the atmosphere through connecting spray discharge passages. The embodiment of Fig. 6 incorporates a valve 35 having a pintle 36 for partially or completely closing an axial outlet 34 through a nozzle member 32. The paint also passes to the annular chamber 15 through passages 16 the resultant spray emanating from the member 32 through outlets 33. In this construction the valve 35 is made of metal and is connected to the d.c. source. In a modification of this embodiment the pintle 36 and outlet 34 are omitted, the electrostatic charging of the spray being effected by corona discharge emanating from an annular electrode adjacent the outlets 33.
