Abstract

1,101,506. Rotary pumps. P.V.L. SALMINEN. May 26, 1965 [Sept. 29, 1964; March 15, 1965], No. 22303/65. Heading F1F. A rotary axially-sliding vane pump comprises a cylindrical pump body 1, Fig. 1, closed by an end-cover 6, Fig. 3, formed with an inlet 9 and an outlet 10 and a partition 11 therebetween projecting into a pumping chamber 8 into and out of which vanes 5 received in slots 4 of a rotor 3 axially-slide. The cover 6 includes an inwardly projecting central plug 7 fitting a bore in the rotor 3 and formed with a cam groove 13 co-operable with cam followers 12 formed one on each side face of a vane 5. The cam groove 13 is provided with slanting surfaces 15, 16 leading to an elevated cam surface 14 parallel to the end-face of the partition 11, which eliminates the necessity of slanting faces on the partition itself. This prevents the forcing of the pumped fluid over the top of the vane and leads it is said to a quieter more efficient pump. When operating a pressure pump channels are provided in the rotor forwardly of each vane in the rotational direction of the rotor so that the pumped liquid can act on both axial faces of the vanes to provide balancing of the vanes. Alternatively grooves may be cut in the leading faces of the vanes or the vanes may be formed with axially extending holes open to the pumped liquid at the cover end of the vanes. When operating as a vacuum pump, vane balancing may be achieved by connecting the bottoms of the slots 4 with each other, e.g., by the removal of packing 18 between the end-face of the central plug 7 and the bottom of the rotor bore into which it fits. The vanes may be made of plastics material.
